At-Large Aim: Voting Underway for Houston City Council Runoff

Early voting is now underway for the Dec. 13 joint runoff elections in the City of Houston. On the ballot is Houston City Council At-Large Position 4 and a Houston City College Trustee position.

The City Council race is to replace Letitia Plummer, who left earlier this year to run for Harris County Judge. A crowded field was pared down to two on election night last month, when no candidate received 50% of the vote. The finalists are former councilman Dwight Boykins and attorney Alejandra Salinas. Both candidates recently spoke with KPRC 2 News about their campaigns. Boykins, who ran for mayor in 2019, cited his six years of prior experience on City Council. "Serving with two different mayors, in two different situations where we've had catastrophic hurricanes, and flooding, and droughts," he said. "I think the most important thing people are concerned about in addition to crime, is infrastructure."

Salinas has made improving the city's water system a campaign priority. "Right now, we're losing billions of gallons of water underground due to leaky pipes, which are causing sinkholes around the city," she told KPRC. "We need to fix that infrastructure to protect all Houstonians."

All voters in the City of Houston are eligible for the City Council election. Early voting runs daily through Dec. 9, with Election Day Dec. 13.
