Packing the House: Dems Look to Expand Congress

They're at it again. Democrats have tried to pack the Supreme Court by expanding its size, and pushed to grant statehood to Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico to create four more Senate seats that would likely be in Democrat hands. Now, they're coming for the House. At least two House Democrats are promoting legislation that would expand the House of Representatives by 150 members, from its current 435 to 585. The bill would also allow future expansions of the House beyond that based on population increases.

The House is capped at 435 members by a law passed in 1929. Supporters of expansion argue this would control for the massive population growth since then, by shrinking House districts and giving constituents better representation. But critics smell another motive. "I don't really trust anything that's coming out of the Democrat party right now, because everything seems to be a power grab from them," says Dr. Robin Armstrong, Galveston County Commissioner and Republican National Committee member. "I don't put anything past the Democrats...when it comes to increasing their influence and their power, they're very aggressive."

As for the argument for better representation, Armstrong doesn't necessarily buy it. "I get what they're saying, people may be better represented, and I guess that may or may not be true," he tells KTRH. "But they have a chance to be better represented today, and the way to better represent people today is to solve the issues we have today."

"We have all these different issues, with crime and our economy and things we have to deal with today," he continues. "Let's focus on that and solve those problems, and then we can talk about changing our fundamental institutions."
