Buchanan’s Native Plants, 611 East 11th St., has been serving Houston gardeners for well over 30 years.
Located in the historic Houston Heights, this garden center has long been dedicated to native plants and organic gardening practices. I mention that nearly every time I do an endorsement ad for this wonderful place, but you should know it is so much more than that. And it’s not just a garden center for “inner loopers.”
Buchanan’s has been family owned-and-operated since 1986, when Donna Buchanan started this amazing nursery. It has since been handed it over to her son, Zach, and his wife, Heather.
And they offer Houston’s best selection of hardy natives, perennials, herbs, vegetables, trees, shrubs and roses — all suited our climate. While the nursery’s name indicates they focus on native and adapted perennials and shrubs, they also carry annuals and fruit trees, ornamental trees and shade trees.
Roughly 60 percent of their plant inventory is grown in the greater Houston area, so you know it will work in our sometimes-challenging region. I also believe they have one of the most incredible selections of indoor plants in the area, and they can pot them up for you right on the spot. That’s not a service you see at big box stores and mass merchandisers!
Buchanan’s may also have one of the very best selections of herbs and vegetable transplants in the region. And the knowledgeable staff can help diagnose problems and offer solutions.
Although located in the heart of The Heights, people from all over the Houston area are drawn to the multitude of community events hosted by this quaint but efficient nursery. In fact, let me invite you to visit on Dec. 1 for their Holiday Open House. They are preparing for their incoming Christmas tree inventory, and they will actually deliver yours to you if you live reasonably close by.
By the way … I’m not sure if this is factual or not, but I believe Buchanan’s was the first area nursery to bring in food trucks on spring and summer weekends. All I know is a lot of guys appreciate their presence while their wives meander through this magnificent nursery, spellbound by the beauty and expertise they find!
