The Big Apple, Big D…yes, catchy monikers for those cities, but I’ve long believed in something more descriptive for this Texas city of Houston: THE BIG HEART.
It was literal, decades ago, when Houston led the world in heart transplants, technology and research and when astronauts with heart throbbing courage walked on the Moon and with heartbreaking tragedy perished in Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia.
But the figurative part of Houston’s Big Heart is displayed every day, in our continuous outreach to those in need. When trouble strikes, Houstonians always step up, in a very big way, to help. The world saw it during a Hurricane named Katrina as we did all we could to help our neighboring state. The world sees it now as we dig deep to help ourselves and to thank with all our hearts those who have come to help us. More storms are bearing down even now. Houston…meaning Houstonians… will respond, as we always do, with the BIG HEART.
