SIR 007

The death of Roger Moore…British Sir Roger Moore…feels personal.  That’s partly the impact of an actor playing a continuing and indelible role.  For you youngsters, he was one of several  007’s….the cinematic British spy James Bond.

Some Houstonians have an added personal reaction because they met Moore when he made a charity appearance here almost 20 years ago.  He was charming and he charmed,  yes,  as the character from the tv series “The Saint”….but there’s really no way of not being Bond.

He met up that night here with one of the Bond “girls” as they were known.  Actress and former Houstonian Lois Chiles.  She was Dr. Goodhead to his Bond in “Moonraker”….yes, a story with NASA connections…but a trifle silly.

Still, that was in the day when the movie stars were charming and for the most part not political.  Maybe that’s why.
