SKYWATCHING

When the rain passes, keep your eyes to the skies this week….the night sky. We’re in the midst of a meteor shower called the Lyrid.

Don’t expect thunderbolts of shooting stars, but early this Saturday morning you can expect 1 to 2 meteors every 5 minutes or so.  As always, your best sighting prospects are away from city lights.  So head for the country this weekend, plan your early rise on Saturday (3 am and onward) and look to the northeast sky and the star Vega.

I’ve been using one of those night sky apps on my phone to get situated for star gazing, constellation identity, and general knowledge that I didn’t take away in that astronomy class years ago. When you live in a state with big skies and a population attuned to space exploration, it’s a good thing to keep attuned.
