Abbott Says Funds Still Frozen Until HPD Signs Off

Just when you thought the city of Houston's fight against ICE was finished, Governor Abbott says it's not over yet.

Earlier today, the Houston City Council came to their senses and voted 13-4 to amend, the progressive's anti-ICE ordinance that was passed a couple of weeks ago. That was supposed to be a wrap, and what was necessary for the city to keep the $114 million in public safety grants.

But speaking with Will Cain on Fox, Governor Abbott said otherwise, "For the city of Houston, they're in compliance. However, also a signer of that contract was the Houston Police Department" Abbott said, "As we're speaking right now, the HPD has not fully agreed to fully comply with that very same contract."
According to sources, the HPD policy has to be rewritten to comply with the ordinance, which is why they haven't signed off on it yet.

But Abbott made it clear, they need to sign off on it, or the money will be gone.

"If, the Houston Police Department does not fully comply with the terms of that agreement, to detain any illegals they encounter and to notify DHS of the encounter, then the city and the police department still stand to lose that $110 million dollars" Abbott told Cain.

Abbott’s press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, also said in a statement that the city council’s vote “is a step in the right direction after Houston leaders put public safety at risk with reckless policies that undermined law enforcement.”

"Governor Abbott has been clear: cities in Texas must fully comply with state law and cooperate with federal immigration authorities to keep dangerous criminals off our streets,” Mahaleris also said. “… Governor Abbott expects any policy HPD ultimately adopts to comply with the City's certification that it would fully cooperate with DHS. Governor Abbott will continue to use every necessary tool to protect Texans."

This is a developing story.
