Dating apps just aren't cutting it for some singles looking to meet new people.

Instead, people are using what's called 'hobby' apps to find people who share similar interests. Whether it's running, reading or even wine tasting, those trying to mingle are using what they like to do in their free time to find others to meet.

For example, Goodreads and the running app Strava have picked up millions of new users in the past year. Goodreads has now gained more than 150 million members.

Jennifer Styers is a relationship expert and matchmaker. She said the dating apps are really only working for the "really pretty people."

"The dating apps are old and people have been on them for so long," she said. "There's so many of them and they're all offering the same things."

Styers said she's heard from so many men that are tired of getting no swipes and having to deal with fake profiles.

"Good looking, smart and successful men are telling me that they're getting no hits on the dating apps," Styers said.

People are also using AI to write out their dating profiles or are using it to create an entire profile for them. This has proven to be a turn off for people looking for someone and something real.

"After a while, that depresses people," said Styers about not getting hits on the apps or going on dates with people. "People have gotten sick of this and they're turning to other options."

Those options include the 'hobby' apps or joining a club. Run, bike, or hiking groups have grown in popularity with singles. Reading or cooking groups are also options for people to meet others like them.

Styers said still, the best way to meet someone is organically.

"You get to meet them, see their personality and see if there's a connection there," she said.
