Why haven’t we seen this being used in Houston?
Phoenix police a man led them on a chase throughout the city after he rammed into a couple of patrol cars.
The chase was ultimately brought to an end when police used the grappling system. What is a grappling system?
"A grappler utilizes a netting system to attach itself and lock the rear wheel of a suspect’s car. In this case, it went around the suspect’s rear tire on the driver’s side. The Department of Public Safety first used a grappler nearly two years ago."
Here’s how it works:
"Officers responded to the scene of a vehicle blocking the roadway near Cave Creek and Dear Valley roads at about 2:30 p.m. where they located a man passed out in a car, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
According to police, two police vehicles were used to block the front and rear sides of the car after officers said the man had weapons and what appeared to be drugs inside of his car.
When the driver woke up, he began ramming his vehicle back and forth into the police cars and was eventually able to drive off, according to Phoenix police…
The car was eventually grappled and stopped near 48th Street and the I-10…
The grappler is a large net located on the front bumper of a patrol car that locks onto the back tire of the car they're pursuing, forcing the vehicle to slow and ultimately stop.
Less-lethal munitions and a police K-9 were used to take the driver of the vehicle into custody, Phoenix police said.
Smith was booked into Maricopa County Jail and faced several charges that include misconduct involving weapons, drug possession and unlawful flight from law enforcement."\
