Heroic Police Crossing Guard Gets Hit By Car Protecting Student

Just incredible video showing the moment a school crossing guard in Maryland pushing a middle school student out of the way of an oncoming car.

Baltimore CBS reports:

“Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger shared video of the incident, showing the guard, whom she identified as Cpl. Annette Goodyear of the North East Police Department, raising her hand to stop traffic as a student approaches the crosswalk.
The student starts to jog across the street, and as Goodyear realizes an oncoming car is not stopping in time, she grabs the student and pushes them out of the way. The car instead hits Goodyear.
The driver of the car and several on-lookers attend to Goodyear as she lays on the ground.”
Goodyear was reportedly taken to the hospital with minor, non-life threatening injuries and was later discharged.
The driver was cited for negligent driving, failure to stop at yield sign before entering crosswalk, failure to stop for pedestrian in crosswalk, and driving with an expired registration plate.
Cpl. John Fakner of the North East Police Department says bout Cpl. Goodyear, “we’re just extremely proud of her actions. It was a split-second reaction that saved a child from potential injury. A job well done.”

Cpl. Goodyear told ABCNews, "the only thing I was thinking was to make sure that little girl was safe and that she wasn't the one to take the impact. She has her entire life ahead of her."

Goodyear says she has felt overwhelmed by the positive comments and reactions from those in the community, saying "... it shows you that people out there actually care. And they really, really care that you're a human being. They don't just see you as at uniform at that point. They just see that you're willing to protect their children."

Cpl. Goodyear was awarded a citation by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan.
