Retired Navy SEAL Morgan Luttrell has filed to run for Texas’ 8th Congressional District seat that is being vacated by retiring Republican Kevin Brady.
The district is north of Houston and it includes Walker, Houston, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Trinity, Grimes and Madison counties, as well as parts of Harris and Leon counties.
Luttrell is seeking the Republican nomination, the seat is a GOP strong hold as Brady as served since 1996.
The Dallas Morning News reports:
“Luttrell, who filed as a Republican, served 14 years in the military after graduating from Sam Houston State University and was deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. His brother, Marcus Luttrell, also served as a Navy SEAL and wrote the bestselling book Lone Survivor based on his own experiences in Afghanistan. Lone Survivor was a major success and was made into a Hollywood film in 2013...
In 2017, Luttrell was appointed to the Department of Energy as one of Perry’s senior advisors. Working directly under Perry’s leadership during his time as former President Donald Trump’s Energy Secretary, Luttrell was also the director for Translational Research and Applied Analytics...
Luttrell began to pursue an advanced degree in applied cognition and neuroscience at The University of Texas at Dallas when he retired from the armed forces. After he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and spinal cord damage in an Army helicopter crash, Luttrell wanted to research potential treatments for veterans suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injuries...
As a senior adviser and the director for translational research at the DOE, Luttrell partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs to continue his work studying possible treatments for injured vets. He combined the DOE’s technology with the VA’s clinical data to search for answers.
Luttrell has also partnered with the Boot Campaign, a veteran and military service nonprofit dedicated to supporting active duty service members, as part of his continued effort to help veterans recover from PTSD. He started his own eco-friendly signage company last year, Stronos Industries, and recently obtained his executive certificate in professional leadership development from Harvard Business School.”
