Video on social media purportedly shows Shanghai residents protesting from the windows of their apartment buildings after seven days of a strict COVID-19 lockdown in the city.
As the frustrated residents yell, a drone appears to circle in an apparent attempt restore quiet.
Shanghai reportedly saw 26,000 new COVID cases on Sunday, part of the largest outbreak in two years which has prompted a complete lockdown of the city. China's "zero-COVID" policy aims at completely eradicating the virus by forcing residents city-wide to stay in their homes.
The lockdown has reportedly caused food shortages for many in the city, although some residents get government deliveries. Commercial delivery companies say they have found it hard to keep up with demand, and some orders are delayed a week. Some residents pool bulk orders and share food with neighbors.
The majority of COVID cases in the city have been recorded as asymptomatic, with the highly transmissible omicron BA.2 variant mostly responsible.
China's vaccination rate is around 90%, but experts say the country's vaccine is weaker than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines used in the U.S. and elsewhere.
