Just a nod to another Texas tradition interrupted by Covid19.
This fourth weekend in April traditionally is the State Championship Fiddlers Frolics in my hometown of Hallettsville. Small town yes, but big, big contest of top competitors from across the state, and from all across the country too for the companion out-of-state contest we call “Gone to Texas”.
This would have been the 50th State Championship; the first I will have missed as my father was one of the founders of the contest. The Fryers have a huge extended family of generations of fiddlers all across the world now. The contest joins us, the musicians, the crowds who attend, the people of Hallettsville and the Knights of Columbus who host and benefit from the weekend extravaganza.
But it’s just a readjustment. Next year will be the 50th anniversary and the 50th contest, aligned now by Covid 19. To all the fiddlers and friends, miss ya!
