Guzman was covicted in February on drug trafficking charges. A federal judge in Brooklyn, NY handed down his sentence moments ago.
The 62-year-old was brought to the U.S. to stand trial after two escapes from Mexican prisons. Under his leadership, the Sinaloa cartel was responsible for multiple murders and smuggling huge amounts of cocaine and other drugs into the U.S. The guilty verdict earlier this year brought a mandatory life sentence without parole.
Guzman believes he has been denied a fair trial. His attorneys say that he was framed.
