Why This Houston County Is Growing Faster Than Almost Anywhere Else

It's a landscape of mostly prairie, wide open green fields, and trees, but that's what residents love -- and now the rest of America is starting to appreciate Waller County, Harris County's neighbor to the northwest.

The latest US Census statistics estimate the county's growth by nearly 6-percent last year alone, making it the second-fastest growing in the country, right behind Jasper County, South Carolina.

And that means Waller is growing faster than any other county in Texas.

The county is already preparing for growth, according to it's main official, County Judge Carbett “Trey” J. Duhon III.

"You've got a lot of people coming out here for a variety of different reasons, but it brings a lot of challenges with it.

"Especially after the pandemic, i think you've got a lot more people looking for a lot more elbow room, maybe a little bit slower pace," he says.

And considering the growth of infrastructure required in a fast-growing area, Judge Duhon says he's already prepared to work with Harris and nearby counties to cope with the growth as it comes along.

"Across the board it makes for a lot more work and more planning as well," he added.

It's important to note the statistics of Waller County -- it grew by 5.7-percent last year, while the population is just about 70,000 people -- an entire county with about the same number of people as the City of La Marque.
