CenterPoint Says Natural Gas Smell Across Houston Not Due To System Issues

CenterPoint Energy addressing concerns over a strong smell of natural gas reported in Tomball, Channelview, Cypress and Kingwood on Thursday afternoon.

The energy provider said the odor being reported near Channelview is not connected to any confirmed damage or major issues in its natural gas system. Officials have not said what the exact source of the odor is or if there is any ongoing threat.

The odor could be smelled up the I-45 corridor into northwest and northeast Harris County. That led to dispatch centers being inundated with calls.

CenterPoint says if you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately and contact them.

The Lone Star College Fallbrook campus had to evacuate briefly due to the issue but reopened about 30 minutes later.
