There is a rift in the Republican runoff race in District 35 in San Antonio, where President Trump is backing businessman Carlos De La Cruz, while Governor Greg Abbott and others are supporting State Rep. John Lujan.
In addition to the GOP split, Lujan has been under fire for working with a Democrat consultant.
"He does have some Democrat supporters, and that's what it's taken to actually give Republicans control and a reliable vote for Republican priorities" said Luke Macias, Texas based political consultant, "But, I think he's also shown himself to be a strong supporter of President Trump's agenda."
A recent report noted that Lujan hired longtime Democrat operative Leticia Cantu, but Macias says he's not concerned by it.
"No, but I am concerned that his opponent Carlos De La Cruz has a sister who's the only Republican in Texas to co-author the mass amnesty bill, which a bunch of Democrats in Congress are pushing right now" Macias told KTRH.
Macias also points out that Lujan was a key vote for the Trump-GOP redistricting map
"John Lujan represents a district that strong Democrat voters and operatives have seen in him, somebody who they think will represent their district better than the leftist Democrats who are running" Macias said, "It's taken a lot of work to turn these people, and now that's being used against him in this runoff election."
Early voting runs through Friday, with Election Day on May 26th.
