HISD Plans To Launch AI ‘Future 2’ Schools Next Fall

The rise of AI continues, with Houston ISD announcing plans to launch AI heavy 'Future 2' schools at select locations starting next school year.

The 9 campuses will feature a mix of AI training and human learning.

"It's for pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, and their goal is aligning education with the skills required in a modern economy" said Mary Elise O'bar, reporter with The Texan.

Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles says, the goal is to shift the focus from what to know, to how you think.

"When you graduate, you're going to be entering offices and competing with other colleague's who understand AI tools, who do good prompt engineering and framing of problems using AI" O'bar told KTRH, "Of course, there's a lot of different responses to this."

And some questions, like what exactly will they learn in this program?

"Third and fourth graders completing a 10-step recipe independently, or fifth and sixth grade students putting together a musical from scratch" noted O'bar, "Seeking to combine standard educational programs, with some different practical skills, as AI advances in the future."

It's not regular school, and HISD says the plan is to transform public education.

Here is the list of the 9 schools that plan to start the 'Future 2' program next fall:

  • Bonham Elementary
  • Clemente Martinez Elementary
  • Deady Middle
  • Forest Brook Middle
  • Gregg Elementary
  • Hartman Middle
  • Shadydale Elementary
  • Southmayd Elementary
  • Sugar Grove Academy Middle
