There's been no agreement as a result of Saturday's peace talks in Pakistan between the US and Iran, according to several sources.
The two sides, meeting in face-to-face talks for the first time, negotiated for 21 hours, with Vice President J. D. Vance supervising the talks on the US side, joined by Special Envoy Steve Witcoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Iran's foreign minister and parliamentary speaker negotiated for Iran while Pakistani officials hosted.
Israel did not participate in the Saturday talks.
Vice President Vance said Saturday night that Iran has "chosen not to accept our terms."
"That's bad news for Iran much more than it's bad news for the USA," he added.
The vice president said at a news conference after the talks that "We go back to the United States not having not come to an agreement. We made it very clear what our red lines are, what we're willing to accommodate them on and what things we're not willing to accommodate them on, and they have chosen not to accept our terms.
The talks also became a focal point for actions throughout the day, starting with the US saying it sent two Navy guided-missile destroyers into the Strait of Hormuz, to set a pathway for civilian ships to start moving through the Strait, an assertion contradicted by Iranian leaders, who sent a message to the US and Israel at peace talks, telling US leaders if the US ships are spotted in the waters of the Strait they will be targeted for missile barrages.
One of the hottest disagreements between the two nations has been the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the key waterway through which passes oil and gas but also the ingredients for fertilizer and other very valuable commodities.
President Trump posted on Truth Social, the social media platform, that “We’re now starting the process of clearing out the Strait of Hormuz as a favor to Countries all over the World, including China, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, and many others,” adding that they “don’t have the Courage or Will to do this work themselves.”
