Are Texas Hospitals Pushing To Harvest Your Organs?

When it come to health care in the U.S., sky-high costs are not the only problem. A new report found that hospitals are also trying to cash in by harvesting your organs. Without your consent.

"We serve as patient advocates, and so we help families out when there's a conflict at the hospital, so we see first hand the worst cases, some of the worst abuses" said Dr. John Seago, president of Texas Right For Life.

Sadly, the right for life is not the same for all patients.

"Hospitals see them only as valuable as their organs, and really start pushing and coercing families, or finding other ways to use them as organ donors" Dr. Seago told KTRH.

Back in 2017, State Representative Tom Oliverson (R–Cypress), tried to pass legislation that would close loophole that allows hospitals to harvest patients organs without their consent. It stemmed from a case in Harris County.

"There are certain cases where a hospital administrator or another official can authorize organ donation, even if the patient never wanted that" noted Dr. Seago.

That legislation by State Rep. Oliverson did not pass, but it may be time for lawmakers to try again next session.
