The Senate fight over a Trump-backed voter ID bill is off to a rocky start. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski broke ranks and sided with Democrats to block it in an early vote, while Senator Thom Tillis stayed out after opposing the plan. It’s an early sign Republicans don’t have everyone on the same page as this debate kicks off.
Even so, Republicans are moving ahead, trying to force Democrats on the record. Democrats are digging in, calling the bill “radical” and promising to fight it. With divisions inside the GOP and Senate rules in play, the bill is facing an uphill battle from the start.
