Thanks to Democrats continuing to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security, TSA agents are still not getting paid, leading many to call out sick. That in turn has caused hours-long delays at Hobby Airport for three days in a row.

Political analyst Vlad Davidiuk says there isn’t really any off-ramp to this standoff other than either Trump or the Democrats caving—and neither is likely. “I don’t see the Trump administration being willing to back down to the radical Democrats over their intentional chaos,” he explained.

He also says Democrats really don’t have much motivation to back down either, because this is really the only political bargaining chip they have. He believes that because we are still so far out from the November election, they could hypothetically carry on with this shutdown for weeks before they would wind up having to pay for it at the polls.

One thing Davidiuk does believe could come out of a prolonged shutdown is greater support for more privatization when it comes to things like airport security. “When Democrats pull these kinds of stunts, it helps further those arguments—to move more confidently in that direction, to avoid more of these chaotic elements,” he said.
