Forecasters Say Rain is Needed as Regional Drought Looms Over Texas

Meteorologist, Jeff Linder, says last Fall was extremely dry setting the stage for dry weather conditions. Lindner says we haven’t seen any rain since Valentine’s Day. “The drought has continued to degrade across the area, so right now, the drought is anywhere from moderate to extreme drought.” Linder said.

He says the rain is much needed. “We desperately need this rain to fill up our water supply and replenish some of the lakes- especially in other parts of the state. It’s not quite as bad here in Southeast Texas, not as bad as the Hill Country." Linder said.

The meteorologist attributes the conditions to La Nina in Southeastern Pacific. “Some of the good news is La Nina (cooler waters with dry conditions) is starting to transition to more neutral water conditions. It’s not going to go away overnight; we’re going to need multiple rounds of rainfall to help alleviate this drought.” He said.

The weather forecaster says to expect more severe weather by Wednesday. Linder reminds everyone severe weather is more common in the Spring. “I think the storm chances are going to ramp up by Tuesday, Wednesday. That’s the large hail, the damaging winds, and the potential for isolated tornadoes.
