US Appeals Court Upholds Louisiana Ten Commandments Law

A US Appeals Court rules in favor of the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public schools. The 5th circuit court of appeals voted 12-6 to lift a block a lower court first placed on the law in 2024. The report says the court acknowledged it was too early to make a judgement call on the constitutionality of the law. The schools will need to work out the logistics and related policies necessary before they display the religious text.

The news comes as Texas SB-10 law is under court injunction facing intense legal battles.

The six judges who voted against the decision wrote a series of dissents, some arguing that the case was ripe for judicial review and others saying that the law exposes children to government-endorsed religion in a place they are required to be, presenting a clear constitutional burden.

Circuit Judge James L. Dennis wrote that the law "is precisely the kind of establishment the Framers anticipated and sought to prevent."

The laws have been challenged by families representing other religions including Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Atheists.
