Following the Supreme Court decision this morning that struck down a number of President Trump’s tariffs issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), President Trump has announced the imposition of new tariffs.
During a press conference following the ruling, President Trump said that while certain tariffs under IEEPA have been struck down, tariffs imposed through other acts—such as the Trade Expansion Act of 1962—have been strengthened.
He announced that he will be imposing a new 10% tariff across the board in response to the IEEPA tariffs being struck down, using Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
During the press conference, President Trump also blasted the Supreme Court ruling while praising Justices Kavanaugh, Alito, and Thomas, who all dissented.
President Trump criticized the time it took for the Court to release the tariff ruling, saying: “I’ve been waiting for this decision for so long! They could have made this decision a long time ago. It’s not complex. They’re wrong on it, and it’s a ridiculous decision, but they should have released this a long time ago.”
He says the good news now is that we have the decision, and that brings certainty—and also strength—to other tariffs, such as those applied via the Trade Expansion Act.
