Even as Houston's mayor tours some nightclubs in the Houston area, violence appears at a club along Washington Avenue on Saturday night.
Witnesses said it was fight between two men just after midnight that escalated when one of them pulled a gun and shot, then ran.
Police and Emergency Medical Services were called, with the gunshot victim then rushed to a hospital where he's said to have been in critical condition.
Police are looking for the shooter and are expected to look at some security video that could shed some light on what the shooter looks like.
Meanwhile, Mayor John Whitmire joined police in walking through some bars a few miles away in the Midtown area, remarking on his commitment to trying to reduce violence at bars and restaurants.
"I'm with the health department, the fire department, HPD, the state police, making certain the Midtown clubs are following city ordinances and state laws," the mayor said Saturday night.
The scene on Washington created moments of chaos as bullets flew and bystanders jumped for cover.
One bullet hit a window, and patrons were scared enough to go running, according to one witness.
There were no other injuries reported.
