Retirement Living evaluated 31 Texas cities focusing on stretching the dollar and access to healthcare. The report shows the median rent is $1308 a month, which comes below the Texas median rent of $1866 a month.
“Good to see there are places people can still get ahead- especially those looking to retire. A lower cost of living allows them to pay for other things, spend time with grandkids, and enjoy entertainment compared to other inflated cost of living places in many other areas across Texas.” Economist Vance Ginn said.
The report showed there is more access to healthcare with 281 primary care physicians per 1000 seniors, compared to a statewide ratio of 5.9 per 1000 seniors. This would translate to shorter wait times and fewer barriers. “That’s very helpful for those want to live healthy- in case-there’s a fall- that they can be seen right away.” He said.
The city also offers more parks according to the report. “You need to keep moving and walking (as we age) so it's great Pasadena offers so many places to do that.” Ginn said.
Safety was another important winning factor, with Pasadena placing 25th overall with 6.2 violent crimes and 28.2 property crimes per 1,000 residents according to the report. “It could still improve given the ranking it has, but considering the other opportunities that are available in Pasadena- it highlights the success many seniors can have for retiring.” He said.
The other 2 cities, ahead of Pasadena was Wichita Falls in first place and Carrollton, Texas in second place.
