The midterms are still about nine months away, but it is never too early to begin casting the die and laying the foundation for what people will support in November. President Trump has taken the country by storm, with soaring approval ratings and a strong backing from most of the party. But there are things that remain to be fixed or upgrades within the GOP. Unification is a big one, but there is also a lot left to prove to the voter base.
The midterms following an election are historically touch for the sitting majority, which is currently Republicans controlling all three branches of government. The GOP has aims to build on that majority, but tough work remains. Especially as Democrats grow more desperate and more vicious. Non-Presidential elections also lack turnout, especially among Republicans when Trump is not on the ballot. They need to get the base fired up for November.
So, if the Republicans have any hope of not just growing their majority, but simply maintaining it as it stands, there are three things that need to be done. Author of the book "Rediscovering America" Scott Powell says one of the most critical things is restoring true election integrity and faith in the system.
"If we have dishonest elections, then the government is illegitimate...and when the government is illegitimate, it is a slippery slope to a banana republic," he says.
The idea the GOP needs to do anything is hard to believe, considering how hard the Democrats have cratered. According to polling from Quinnipiac, congressional Democrats have hit a job approval rating of 18-percent, and a 73-percent disapproval rating. Those are the worst since tracking began in 2009.
Yet the Republicans also cannot get out of their own way sometimes. Party unity has been a problem. But a lack of backbone on things like election integrity have rubbed voters the wrong way. A lot of words get said but no true action gets taken. People want free, honest and fair elections. Returning to that could go a long way with GOP voters.
"With illegitimacy comes corruption, and that is what we have seen...we have had corrupt elections for at least three Presidential cycles," says Powell. "We have a big problem, and it is on a very big scale."
That is not the only thing that has voters' attention. Items two and three on which the GOP needs to focus are one in the same. People have grown tired with crime, a lack of accountability in the justice system, and the brazen defiance of law and order. More importantly, people are tired of illegal immigrants being a drain on the system and are massively in favor of deportations.
It has become a pillar of President Trump's second administration, but other Republicans need to get on board with the idea. Some still fold like lawn chairs the second things get tough, like they have in Minnesota, and will ask to "tone down" deportation operations. The people made their voices known and it is time for the party to back Trump, giving him the policy and tools he needs to succeed.
"The duly elected Donald Trump has a mandate to deport illegal aliens...he is trying to carry out his mandate, and what is happening? ICE officers are now under assault," Powell says.
Powell adds that if the GOP can accomplish restoring these three things, then the GOP might not just keep their majority in November. They might even gain seats.
