Left-wing outrage over the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis has led Democrats to demand a funding cut for DHS/ICE. Some are even saying they’d be willing to shut down the government over the issue.
Prediction markets have gotten in on the action, showing roughly a 75–80 percent chance that Democrats really do go through with it and shut down the government for the second time in just four months.
One question that now needs to be asked is whether this is sincere concern or just more politics. Fort Bend County GOP Chairman Dr. Bobby Eberle thinks it’s the latter. “With what’s going on in Minneapolis, the Democrats are kind of seizing on this opportunity to score points with their base,” he said. “That’s what this is all about.”
Dr. Eberle went on to warn that the average American might not be as receptive to these attacks on ICE as Democrats hope. “It’s a branch of law enforcement tasked with deporting those who are here illegally and have deportation orders,” he explained. “That’s what they’re doing.”
He also pointed out that shutting down the government requires an immense amount of political capital—and with Democrats having set a record for the longest shutdown in American history just a few months ago, political capital is something they’re short on right now.
