Freezing Temps and Icy Weather Could Hit Galveston This Weekend

A strong cold front is expected to move through Galveston with freezing temperatures hitting the area by Saturday night until Monday. Galveston County Judge, Mark Henry, says the biggest concern is rain on the overpass with icy conditions.

“If we get precipitation, we will have the temperatures for freezing then that changes everything. we encourage everyone to pay attention to credible news sources such as KTRH and our emergency management website so they can get the most accurate and up to date information.” Henry said.

He says TX DOT manages the roadway system, as the county will update the public with road closures. He says the last forecast reflected a small amount of rain, so he is hopeful the forecast holds up.

I don’t know that we’re terribly concerned if that holds true. He says to be sure to bring your pets inside. “If it’s not safe, for you, it’s not safe for your pets.” Henry added.

He says because we typically deal with hurricanes and not freezing weather, people lose sight of being safe with heaters and generators. ‘Your space heater can start a fire without you around it and the gas generator needs to be kept in well-ventilated areas.” He said.

The county judge says they don’t expect the weather event to go on past Monday, he says it should last 72 hours.
