One Killed in Sunday Confrontation with Houston Police

A man said to be menacing a north Houston neighborhood was shot and killed by a police officer Sunday afternoon.

The man was harassing his family at a home not far from 69 The Eastex Freeway at the North Loop 610 about 2:30 pm just some people were leaving a couple of nearby churches, according to Houston Police Department Assistant Chief J. Skelton.

Police were called by several people nearby, and when they arrived they found the unidentified man walking around brandishing a weapon.

"As the officers continued to give the suspect verbal commands to drop his weapon, the suspect raised his weapon and our officers had to unfortunately discharge their weapon," Skelton says.

"Once the suspect was down, officers attended to him, and realized there were no further measures they could do, so unfortunately the suspect died.

"There's a church [across the street] and the parishioners were letting out, adjacent to us there's another church.

"It was a very dangerous scene for the residents who live in this area," he added.

"Before officers arrived, the suspect was inside a residence here, threatening family members with the weapon and he also attempted to gain entry to the back of the residence where there is a screen door that is ajar, so that's what kind of led up to this today."

The officer who shot will go under routine investigations and is a 3-year veteran of Houston Police Northeast Division.

"I'd like all of you to wrap your arms around this officer, this is very very tragic for him and he's going to have to deal with this."
