Amazon Uses Technology to Lay Off 14,000 Employees

When Amazon began laying off 14,000 employees, staffers received a text, followed by an email with a subject line: “Update Regarding Your Role at Amazon,” followed by a message, “Unfortunately your role is being eliminated.” Employees could join a meeting with a company leader or reach out to representative with human resources if they needed to ask questions.

“When someone spends 40 plus hours a week with their organization, an email and a text notification seems to fall short of decency.” Workplace expert, Joshua Evans said.

Evans says in a world of ghosting, it’s not surprising. He says human interaction isn’t prioritized over digital interaction.

“I think it’s a sad but telling view of the future. It seems so inhumane. To have it done electronically- it’s just cold.” He said.

Evans also points to the fact that businesses want the employees to do what’s right and ethical while on the job, but it is not a 2-way street here.

The workplace expert says there is hope and there are some organizations out there that are doing it the right way.

However, he says you can tell a lot by how a company treats their employees- especially on the way out.
