On this day Americans celebrate the veterans who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy, and one way to help our children understand the value of liberty is to acquaint them with the people who've served -- with one such spectacular display today in the Sugar Land area.
More than 2,000 flags are exhibited at "The Field of Honor" in a solemn formation on a full acre of land at the University of Houston Sugar Land campus, providing a stunning visual tribute to the number and importance of those who've served.
There will be a special ceremony Tuesday evening at 6:30, just after dark to emphasize the lighting display, it's beauty and its highlighting of uniqueness of each flag, each of whom have given to the community.
Exchange Club spokesman Scott Arthur says, "it is a great opportunity to bring the kids, and let them walk up and down and let them see the flags and have mom or dad or grandpa or a veteran explain what those flags are...and what America still is."
Tuesday's ceremony will honor veterans exclusively, although the display itself honors many local heroes.
The display is hosted by The Exchange Club of Sugar Land and is positioned on land near the Brazos River, with each of the large 3'x5' flags illuminated at night in remembrance.
"I have to tell you, the flags in the wind, the rows and rows and rows of flags -- it's just inspiring."
The flags have individual sponsors and the money goes to numerous charities the Exchange Club sponsors, with Title Sponsors KK and Scott West.
"Each one of these flags represents an individual and tells a story," Mr. Arthur points out, about "those serving in our military, our veterans, as well as those who've been killed, first responders and those who inspire freedom wherever they go, including clergy, coaches, teachers and other educators and family members."
