Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo spent a lot of her time during Friday's State of the County Speech pushing for a property tax hike. But don't look for her to pay property taxes herself.
"I know taxes are high, trust me. I still can't afford property taxes. I don't own a home. I rent an apartment," she stated. Hidalgo, makes over $190 thousand a year.
Even though County Commissioners, including two Democrats, voted down her tax hike (which she says would pay for her pet early childhood education program), she plans to bring it up again.
"Members of the community that supported us are forming a committee to help advance this from now into next year," Hidalgo said.
The judge also did not give any hints as to what her 2026 plans are. She has yet to announce an official run for a third term. There has also been speculation that she could run for Congress.
"I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to break news on that," Hidalgo said in an attempt to avoid the question. "It is coming very, very, very, very soon."
