The Harris County Commissioners approved a nearly $470,000 sponsorship of the 2025 Gay Softball World Series, which is set to take place here in Houston in late September. This was pushed by Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia.

He says the event will bring in extra revenue from our hotel and vehicle rental taxes, meaning that the sponsorship will essentially pay for itself. But with the event only being around five days long, there are questions about whether or not that's actually the case.

Those were the concerns raised by Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, who was the only no vote. He said, "I'd rather do something that's going to generate people coming into the county over the next decade, more than a one-week event."

Ramsey also pointed out that it doesn't really make sense to spend this kind of money given the county's ongoing budget struggles. He said, "This year, when we're looking at all the departments to make cuts where we can, everything we do needs to focus on core services."

He says at the end of the day, this is just another example of how Harris County doesn't actually have a revenue problem; we just have a massive spending problem thanks to our Democratic county leadership.
