Harris County Taxpayers could see a $60 million tax increase to pay for a project pushed by County Judge Lina Hidalgo.
The “Early Reach” program provides taxpayer funded child care. Up till now, it has been paid for with federal covid relief funds, but that money is now running out.
Hidalgo is calling for a property tax increase to pick up the tab.
Republican commissioner Tom Ramsey is calling it the “Titanic tax,” where it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Democrat and Republican county commissioners are calling for a lot more information.
The proposal could come up before commissioners court on August 7.
If they approve, voters would have the chance to vote on it in November.
