A man pulled a gun while being questioned by Houston Police on the north side Saturday afternoon, according to a police spokesman.
Witnesses said a man in a green SUV was driving erratically northbound on I-45 the North Freeway near West Road about 3:45 and caused two cars to collide.
Police were called, who were told about the SUV, and officers said they determined that damage to the two cars was minor, so the cars were pulled off the freeway.
A search for the green vehicle led police to pull the SUV driver over, but when officers walked to the car the driver brandished a gun while still seated in the vehicle.
Officers said he seemed "intoxicated," and they felt threatened, so they shot him. He was later pronounced dead.
The two officers each had a year or less experience on patrol, according to Assistant Police Chief Melendez-Sierra.
An investigation by the Harris County District Attorney's office will be accompanied by two internal investigations by the Houston Police Department.
