Hurricane Preparation Brings Confidence In Surviving Disasters: Survey

Houstonians are active in preparing for local disaster such as hurricanes, which raises their confidence in surviving such disasters, but most continue to worry about the possible devastation that might result, according to a new Rice University survey.

More than half of those asked, about 58%, told interviewers they feel somewhat or very well prepared, but seven out of ten of those asked, or about 70%, report worrying at least somewhat about aspects of potential disasters.

Nine out of ten, or 90%, agreed that it will be at least somewhat likely that they will be impacted by such a disaster in the future, according to the Rice University Kinder Institute for Urban Research Greater Houston Community Panel Disaster Preparedness Brief that began last year but was reported on Tuesday.

Breaking down the survey's results show that the higher the annual income reported by each home, the more likely the people are to feel like they are prepared and have made more preparations than average.

The results indicate that the more actions taken by an individual to prepare for Gulf Coast area disasters, the more likely that individual will feel confident in the overall effectiveness of preparing for disasters.

And the survey indicates that the higher the trust in local government and officials on the part of an individual, the more likely that person will take preparedness action and will therefore feel more prepared.

Hurricane season begins June 1st.
