Monday Update: Woman, Infant Identified After Channelview Drowning

A woman and an infant who apparently drowned in a submerged vehicle Friday have been identified.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at around 4:45 p.m. at 17350 Market Street in Channelview.

Deputies said witnesses jumped into the water and rescued two children, believed to be around 5 and 7 years old.

The body of a 39-year-old woman and a one-year-old were recovered from the water.

They're identified as Crystal Hall Njepu, who was driving the SUV that ended up submerged in water, and her one-year-old daughter, Annah, both of whom were found in the car.

A dive team and marine unit searched for the two.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it's possible that the driver had some sort of medical emergency. Investigators are trying to determine what exactly led to the vehicle driving into the water.

There are reports that a GoFundMe account has been created by Njepu's sister, to help cover funeral costs and support the two children who survived the accident.
