Fort Bend ISD has approved a new gender policy that affects how schools handle student identities and participation in sports. The board passed the policy in a 5-2 vote Monday night after more than four hours of debate.
The policy requires staff to notify parents if a student wants to change their name, identify as transgender, or use different pronouns. It also limits athletic competitions and restroom access based on biological sex and bans classroom materials that promote gender fluidity.
Supporters say it protects children and upholds biological truth, while critics argue it forces a one-size-fits-all worldview on students and staff.
Similar policies have already been enacted in neighboring districts like Katy ISD and Cypress-Fairbanks. Fort Bend officials say the new rules take effect immediately.
