Why Are So Many Texas House Members Skipping Work?

In case you didn't realize it, the 89th Texas Legislative Session is now more than half way over, and yet last Friday more than half the members of the Texas House didn't show up for work.

It's being called a 'quorum collapse'.

"For a quorum, that means you need 100 people there" said Brandon Waltens, senior editor at Texas Scorecard, "Well, when the attendance was taken, there were actually only 65 members there."

Not good numbers, and not a good look.

"A lot of the concern that people have right now is that the Texas House isn't moving fast enough, and not taking the job seriously enough" Waltens told KTRH, "We are now over half way through the session, they haven't passed a single bill. That's a problem for the House Speaker if he can't inspire members to show up."

And that is where the problem starts, with House Speaker Dustin Burrows.

"The Speaker controls what the members are going to be voting on" Waltens noted, "Rep. Brian Harrison was the one who called the speaker out on the fact that there were not a majority of members there."

With concerns that Burrow may be running out the clock, to prevent the passage of the Republican priorities.

It's worth noting, this is the 3rd legislative session in a row that the Texas House has not had a quorum for at least one day. Meanwhile, the Texas Senate has already passed more than half of their priorities.
