Texas Land Commissioner has informed the Trump administration of two more border islands near the Rio Grande that need to be secured.
"We have two islands, Roma island and Beaver island, safe havens for the cartels from which they were operating their smuggling activities" said Commissioner Buckingham, "We are taking away their safe spots that they use to smuggle drugs, guns, and people."
These border islands are referred to as a "smuggler's paradise".
"They haven't been declared Texas, they haven't been declared Mexico" Buckingham told KTRH, "And because of that, law enforcement and the military cannot step on these islands. So they are literally safe havens for the cartels."
The good news is, this is not the first time these islands have been dealt with. In 2023, 3 other border islands were secured. And now it's time to do it again.
"These are declared Texas, let's get this party started so to say, and let's get these cartels off these islands" noted Buckingham, "We can do it now."
They hope to get it done within just a few weeks.
