An investigation is underway into an early morning "wrong way" car accident that shut down the Highway 288 toll road near Manvel on Sunday.
Two people were riding in a Tesla headed south in the northbound lanes about 2:30 am when the vehicle smashed into a concrete barrier in the median.
Manvel Police Department officials say it looks like the car immediately caught fire upon impact.
Investigators say they suspect driving at high speed may have helped cause the accident.
It's not clear whether alcohol was involved or if the car came upon another vehicle and had to swerve to get out of its path.
Officials say tests will be given to check the alcohol content in the blood of the victims.
It took a while during Sunday's pre-dawn hours for crews to clean up the debris from the accident that was strewn across the freeway lanes.
And investigators said Sunday they aren't sure whether there might have been a third passenger in the badly burned vehicle.
