In a bit of a surprise in Austin, some Republicans in the Texas House & Senate, are trying to revive red-light ticketing camera systems on school buses.
"The people don't want this, it's outrageous because we know it's really not about school safety" said Terri Hall, director of the transportation freedom advocacy group TURF, "This is a revenue generating scheme."
The twist is that back in 2019, it was Republicans who killed the cameras to protect drivers rights.
"At the end of the day, this really is more of a ticketing scam to entrap drivers and just make motorists pay up so that these camera companies can make millions off the backs of people's unintentional mistakes by not being able to stop quickly enough, when that arm first comes out" Hall told KTRH.
Senate Bill 744 faced fierce opposition last week during a hearing, basically for being rigged against drivers, while insuring millions for the camera companies who end up pocketing 70% of the fines.
"Just as they put that arm down, those are the people they're capturing with literally thousands of violations, and it's just to make money" noted Hall.
It's also worth noting that multiple people from previous bus camera systems are now in prison, after a multi-million dollar bribery and kickback scheme was exposed in Dallas County.
