Today is the big day, as president Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada and Mexico are set to begin. But the use of tariffs is not a new one. Former president William McKinley used them in the late 1800's.
The question is, what if anything, can Trump learn from the McKinley tariffs?
"It was a very different period in history, and so I think the dynamics are very different" said Andrew Hale, a senior analyst with the Heritage Foundation who notes that the current Trump tariffs are not being used for trade, but instead as leverage to make the best deal for the U.S.
"As a tool of negotiation, tariffs have been very, very effective for the president" Hale told KTRH, "And the hope is that the Canadians and Mexicans give him what he wants, and they concede to his demands."
And topping the list of priorities for Trump is help securing the border, and stopping the flow of fentanyl in the U.S.
