Man Admits He Started Northside Blaze: Fire Marshal

The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office says a man is in jail after admitting he started a fire at a northside apartment complex that's left several families without a warm place to go on a cold night.

Firefighters were called to the complex in the 900 block of Cypress Station just off I-45 near FM 1960 about 3 am Saturday, where they found a number of apartments billowing smoke.

By the time the blaze was extinguished, there were seven apartments damaged by fire and about 30 units that sustained water and/or smoke damage, leaving the families who lived there with no home for the night.

Eight families said they have nowhere to go on a night when temperatures could dip below 40.

Investigators said Saturday night that most of the damaged apartments were unoccupied.

One person was injured and was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Meanwhile, the Fire Marshal's office said Saturday that 25-year-old Tyricen Hawthorne told authorities he started the fire and has been charged with arson of a habitation.
