President Donald Trump has offered a buyout option for any federal employee that would allow them to resign from their positions this week, but continue to receive pay and benefits until September 30th of this year.
Government employees were originally required to notify the administration of whether or not they would be accepting the buyout option by Thursday, February 6th; however, that deadline has been delayed by U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr.
This buyout is just part of Trump's mission to significantly shrink the federal government. In pursuit of that goal, Trump has required all federal employees to return to in-person work and has also ordered a temporary freeze on all hiring within the federal government.
This ruling from Judge O'Toole Jr. comes as a result of a lawsuit from multiple labor unions. O'Toole did not make any ruling on the legality of the buyout plan itself.
