The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has their next national chair.
On Saturday, the party elected Minnesota party leader Ken Martin, who once called President Donald Trump a "traitor" who should be tried for treason. Over the past eight years, Martin has served as a DNC vice chair and has led the association of state Democratic Party chairs.
The move comes after a worst-case scenario November for Democrats who lost control of the White House and the Senate and failed to flip the House.
Eight candidates in total were trying to succeed DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, who opted against seeking a second straight four-year term. Martin beat out Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler by over 100 votes in ballots cast by 428 DNC members.
"We have one team, one team, the Democratic Party," Martin said following his victory. "The fight is for our values. The fight is for working people. The fight right now is against Donald Trump and the billionaires who bought this country."
Martin has been strongly opposed to Trump for many years. In 2020, he called Trump a "traitor" who should be tried for treason.
"[Donald Trump] should be immediately impeached and then put on trial for treason," Martin wrote on June 29, 2020. "His actions led to the deaths of American soldiers. He is a traitor to our nation and all those who have served."
