How are kids doing in school? The new national test scores have been released, and they're not very good. Students in 4th and 8th grade have fallen behind in reading in math. Even here in Texas
"Well, the results may be new but the story is the same" said Jonathan Butcher, senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, "Scores were on the downward trend even before Covid, but that kind of accelerated after the pandemic."
Kids started falling behind in public schools well before Covid, and unfortunately right now they are not catching up, which is glaring indictment on government schooling.
"What we're seeing now is, that there really hasn't been recovery since the pandemic, at least as measured on these results" Butcher told KTRH, "In particular in reading, the results are particularly discouraging. Their focus on DEI and identity politics, it didn't do anything to help student achievement."
The one thing that is helping test scores go up, and education for students to improve, is school choice.
"The state policies that focus on core content, instead of identity politics like the Biden administration was pushing, are really important" noted Butcher.
Hopefully, we haven't ruined an entire generation.
