One of the first executive orders that president Donald Trump signed on day one, was to end 'birthright citizenship'. As expected, the response from the left was to fight it, claiming the order violates the 14th amendment.
"No other country in the world would have such an insane rule, that if you are born on U.S. soil you are automatically a U.S. citizen" said John Davidson, senior editor at The Federalist, "That is not what the 14th amendment citizenship clause means. The idea of birthright citizenship is a very bad misreading and erroneous interpretation of the citizenship clause."
So how will this play out?
"It'll probably go to the U.S. Supreme Court, it needs to go to the Supreme Court" noted Davidson, "We can't go on with this insane immigration policy that says if you manage to get over the Rio Grande, then any children that are born here are automatically American citizens. That's crazy, and there's no way that the framers of the 14th amendment intended that. Hopefully the Supreme Court will fix it."
In the meantime, Trump's executive order rejecting birthright citizenship has been blocked by a liberal federal judge in Seattle.
